Reach, Color, Repeat

Reach, Color, Repeat is an interactive video installation that allows visitors to create a digital abstract painting by using body gestures.

Dimensions: 2.8 ft x 3.3 ft
Materials: computer with custom software, Kinect v2 interface, video projector

Showings:

  • LINE – A National Juried Exhibition, Attleboro Arts Museum, Attleboro, MA, Jun 15 to Jul 15, 2017

  • Digitalia: National Juried Exhibition of Digital Art, Barrett Art Center, Poughkeepsie, NY, Mar 18 to Apr 15, 2017

As visitors approach, they see their shape on the projected screen with a palette of colors overhead. More than one person can reach up, select colors, and use their hands and body movements to draw in the air. This installation involves the viewer in a satisfying process of interacting with vibrant colors to experience the creation of a work of art.

The system captures the gestures and patterns of colors created and starts a watercolor simulation that causes the colors to bleed together. Painting strokes that were captured are added back into the composition, randomly rotated, and scaled. This is repeated until a unique, colorful abstract painting is complete.

A Microsoft Kinect captures the visitors’ gestures connected to a laptop with custom software. A video projector provides the imagery for the screen.
