Janken 2005
Janken is the Japanese word for the common game known in the US as Rock-Paper-Scissors. Roughly translated, it means hand game but also implies fist, strike and gambling.

Janken presents two aspects: when interacted with, it engages the viewer with a very familiar hand gesture game. Without human interaction, it reverts to the performance of a random and unfamiliar sign language.
Janken was shown at COLLISIONseven, 2nd chance, MIT Stata Center Gallery, Cambridge, MA, Apr 23 to May 08, 2005

I remember this work so well: a thoroughly successful combination of impressive technology and loads of fun! As children, in Korea, we played jyang kemi sheya often, especially when we needed to establish some sort of pecking order. (A version exists in Italy, too.) At the COLLISIONseven show, I managed to beat Janken several times!
